Recently I have been taking the Recreating a Master Work Class at Colorest in Red Bank, New Jersey, with Scott Nickerson It is a fascinating experience which I feel is a great way to learn painting, because you must figure out how an old master achieved the result. The latest painting we worked on is by J Vermeer. Here is my work:
This painting had so much to learn. One fascinating idea is how Vermeer utilized perspective to achieve the objective of the composition. This is described in a MET book The Milkmaid by Walter Liedtke, which I highly recommend. The use of light and layered color was a great learning experience!
